In October 2023, Storm Babet brought devastating floods to Brechin, causing severe damage to homes, businesses, and community spaces. The River South Esk overflowed its banks, overwhelming existing flood defences and leaving hundreds of residents displaced.
Brechin has a long history of flooding, with major events recorded as far back as 1853. After the 2002 flood, a flood prevention scheme was introduced, completed in 2015. While it initially held up against smaller events, the sheer volume of rainfall during Storm Babet proved too much. The flood defences were breached, leading to catastrophic damage across the town.
Entire streets were submerged, homes were gutted, and local businesses were forced to close. Residents were left to pick up the pieces, with little support from local authorities. This site aims to bring the affected community together, share their stories, and push for a stronger response to prevent future disasters.
We encourage you to sign up today so that as a community we can come together to ensure this never happens again.
